The two kittens are Amber (calico colours) and Opal (grey with blond/red underneath). They had been born feral to an abandoned mother, and had been rescued from under a shed before going into foster care.

The first picture, AmberAndOpal01.jpg, was taken shortly after I brought the kittens home (late April 2005). Amber is curled up on one of the chairs under the table. These kittens were so scared and nervous when I first brought them home. She felt safe there under the table, able to watch what was happening in the room while staying (mostly) out of sight.

Pictures 02-05 were taken a few weeks later, showing the kittens lazing around in the middle of the floor. You can just see their first small scratching post at the top of the pictures. After taking those pictures I took down their can of Whiskas treats, which I'd been using to nurture that bond of trust. As you can see they're not afraid to come get treats when they hear the can rattling (pictures 06-07). Those pictures were taken about a month after they came home (late May 2005).

Then another couple months later (late July 2005) I found them sharing the top platform on their kitty skyscraper, having a nap while draped all over the top of it (pictures 08-10). The platform they're on is about 6' high, and they love it. They climb, scratch, play and sleep all over this thing, but most of I think they like being able to look down over the entire room. They're quite the princesses, especially Amber.

And then, not long after, I found both of them on my bed, rolling around in the socks that I had laid out to finish drying. They were wrestling with the socks and doing their best to bury themselves underneath them all. I laughed, and had to grab the camera (pictures 11-13).

By looking at the earlier pictures and comparing them with the ones I took today I can definitely see that their faces have filled out, and they're now at a good weight. It's only by looking back at the earlier pictures now that I can see how thin they were back then.

Opal is definitely the more gregarious, openly affectionate one of the pair. It didn't take her long to warm up to me, and start on the bed with me at night. Although now I keep them out of the bedroom at night; I don't need to be woken up at 3:00 am by the loud purring of a kitten that wants to be petted. Opal regularly wanders around my chair as I sit at my computer, meowing and purring, wanting love and attention. I have to say, it's good to be loved. :)

Amber, the calico, has some SO far from the traumatized, scared little kitten that she used to be. She continues to open up and warm up to me more and more, one little step at a time. It has been about three months since I adopted them and I still can't pick her up (or at least not willingly on her part). But I think that day is not far off. She will readily jump up on my lap to get treats (and immediately jump down). And lately she has come to see me while I sit on the couch, to get love and pets from me, as she curls up on the couch nestled right up next to me.

I had some doubts early on about whether they would warm up to me or not. Amber, in particular, was (and can still be) very skittish with a tendency to run for cover. But they're fun and friendly now, and I'm glad every day that I adopted them.
